Yet Another Active Shooter, 26 Dead Including 18 Children
Today another senseless active shooter incident was carried out in an elementary school of a small Connecticut town. A gunman, with several weapons, entered the school office and started shooting. In the end over 26 are dead.
There will be plenty of news coming out about this tragedy, but every employer and school district needs to train all of their employees and staff on how to respond, and how to save lives.
The Department of Homeland Security Issued These Guidelines On What Your Response Should Be:
- EVACUATE • Have an escape route and plan in mind • Leave your belongings behind • Keep your hands visible
- HIDE OUT • Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view • Block entry to your hiding place and lock the doors • Silence your cell phone and/or pager
- TAKE ACTION • As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter • Act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter
Parents, please teach your kids about how they should react to a shooter. If they know what to do beforehand the chances are that they will respond appropriately and not freeze. Give them the gift of knowledge. It is the least you can do! Everyone else, insist at your place of employment that management address this type of training. If they say it cannot happen here, take upon yourself to learn what to do and how to do it. The life you save could be your own!
